Tampere  Piano Competition

The Tampere Piano Society organizes the national Tampere Piano Competition. The competition was held for the first time in April–May 2017, and again in September 2021. The next edition will take place in spring 2025.

Our goal is to make the Tampere Piano Competition the most significant and comprehensive platform in Finland for showcasing high-level piano education and emerging young pianistic talent. Tampere offers excellent conditions for such a competition — thanks to its strong classical music education, active concert audiences, outstanding venues, central location, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, the only full-scale symphony orchestra in Finland located outside of Helsinki.

The 2021 competition welcomed 43 pianists. It was open to Finnish citizens and pianists aged 15–30 who had studied in Finland for at least three years. The first prize (€10,000) was awarded to David Munk-Nielsen, the second prize to Tatu Eskelinen, and the third prize to Juho Lepistö. The other finalists were Ezgi Göktürk, Mikael Loponen, and Aleksei Zaitsev. The jury consisted of Margit Rahkonen (Chair), Sveinung Bjelland, Eeva Havulehto, Risto Kyrö, and Péter Nagy.

The Tampere Piano Society’s key partners for the 2025 competition are the City of Tampere, the Pirkanmaa Cultural Foundation, the Sibelius Academy Support Foundation, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, the Tampere Conservatoire, the Society of Finnish Composers, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, which will perform in the competition’s final concert.
